4 FAQs for Cosmetologists
We get a lot of questions regarding cosmetology school and being a cosmetologist. In order for you to gain more information on the topic cosmetology, we are here to answer four of the most frequently asked questions about the industry and about getting educated. We hope by the end that you will have a better understanding of the beautiful world of cosmetology.
1.What Does a Cosmetologist Do?
A cosmetologist is an expert in all areas of beauty such as:
- Hair
- Makeup
- Skin Care
- Nails
A cosmetologist wears many hats in the world of beauty. From facials to haircuts to manicures and hair coloring, a cosmetologist can have the skills to cover all the bases.
2.Is a Cosmetologist an Esthetician?
You may be surprised to find out that a cosmetologist and an esthetician are not one and the same. In fact, in most states, if you want to work in both cosmetology and esthetician you must obtain a cosmetologist and an esthetician license.
An esthetician works primarily in skin care. With only an esthetician’s license you are not qualified to work with hair treatments, hair chemicals, and cut hair. However, some estheticians specialize in high demand services such as:
- Electrolysis
- Permanent Makeup
- Chemical Resurfacing
- Microdermabrasion
- Massage and Reflexology
Being a cosmetologist and/or an esthetician can be a very rewarding career. Both are different and require different schooling, however, both are very important and in demand.
3.How Long Does it Take to Receive My License?
At Blake Austin College our cosmetology program is 1600 hours long and our esthetician program is 600 hours long. Blake Austin provides student services including financial aid to those that qualify.
4.What Kinds of Career Can a Cosmetologist Have?
Contrary to popular belief, working in a salon is not the only job a cosmetologist can have. Because of the diverse skill set a cosmetologist has, there are many different options for a career. Some careers you can work with a cosmetology license are:
- Photo and Film Stylist
- Salon Owner
- Wedding & Event Stylist
- Hairstylist
